Yesterday evening the 22 choirs from 14 nations participating in the 4th Int. Anton Bruckner Choir Competition and Festival bearded the bad weather in Linz and came in flocks to the opening concert in Neuer Dom (Mariendom) Linz. Dr. Josef Pühringer, State chairman of Upper Austria warmly welcomed them in the „Land of Bruckner“ and wished that they filled Linz with the sounds of their music in the upcoming days.

Four choirs obliged his wish immediately and performed in the wonderful ambience of the Neo-Gothic Mariendom. Singing Anton Bruckner’s „Locus Iste“ and „Os Justi“ the Bruckner Choir from Linz welcomed the internatioal choirs in its home city. The Chamber Choir Luzern then entertained the audience with traditional songs from Switzerland and the Southern Chorale send musical greetings from the USA. The Swedish S:t Johannes Kammerkör closed the evening’s varied program.

Before the opening first choirs had already performed in the competitions in Mixed Choirs, Youth and Children’s Choirs as well as Sacred Choral Music categories. Today and tomorrow competitions in remaining categories will follow.

Tonight choirs look forward to special Friendship Concerts in the beautiful St. Florian Monastery. This venue is an important place of Anton Bruckner’s activities.

On Saturday evening the big festival choir concert will take place featuring the Dohnáhny Orchestra Budafok from Hungary and the international Festival Choir. The first rehearsal for this concert highlight was already held yesterday.
