Time flies in these days. While the European Choir Games in Graz are drawing to the huge final tomorrow, the 8th Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition has only opened on Thursday in Wernigerode. Today most of the choirs already got their performances in the competition over with.

The opening in Wernigerode was really spectacular: 1300 singers gathered on the market place; 44 choirs from 18 nations. They all marched onto the little square with a great choir parade to make the „colorful city in the Harz mountains” even more colorful. It was not an easy excercise for the many volounteers to bring the choirs to their predetermined places. But at the end everybody was guided to the right place and the opening ceremony could begin.

At first the city’s Mayor Peter Gaffert observed: „Our city has never been as colorful as it is now.” He was even „brave” enough to give his welcoming speech not only in German and English but also in Russian. The artistic director, Ralf Eisenbeiß had a more easy job to greet the international guests of the festival: He sang the Musica Mundi anthem together with all the participants. And by singing together – as it is currently happening in Graz and especially in Wernigerode – everybody understands each other right away: everybody speak the same language – the language of music.
